Jumwa, ODM leaders in supremacy battle in Malindi

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is set for a titanic supremacy battle with party rebel and Malindi Member of Parliament Aisha Jumwa in the upcoming by-election in Ganda Ward, Kilifi County.

The battle lines were drawn Monday with the clearance of Mr. Reuben Mwamure Katana as the orange party’s candidate for the October 17 by-election and the expected clearance of Independent Candidate Abdul O. Mohamed.

Mr. Mohamed, whose 2017 win was nullified by the courts, will defend his seat as an independent candidate and Ms Jumwa has declared her support for him, promising to white-wash ODM party and to counter the notion of its presumed popularity in Kilifi County.

Three ODM Members of the Kilifi County Assembly (MCAs) who accompanied Mr. Katana to present his papers at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) offices in Malindi Town vowed to recapture the seat on the party ticket.

“We are declaring the mother of all battles in this by-election because we cannot afford to lose this seat,” Kakuyuni Ward MCA Nixon Mramba declared.

He assured Party Leader Raila Amolo Odinga, his deputy, Mombasa Governor, Hassan Ali Joho and Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi that the party would clinch the seat during the by-election slated for October 17.

“We are telling you, Jumwa to continue dancing chakacha (a traditional dance) but we are taking our seat back. This seat belongs to ODM and we must take it back whether you like it or not.” Mramba said during a press briefing at the IEBC offices.

Mramba accused Jumwa of double-speak, claiming that she was going round telling voters to vote for an individual and not parties, yet she was the one who two years ago told people to vote for the party and not individuals.

He dared the combative MP to resign from the party and Parliament and seek a fresh mandate if she was confident of a win.

“If you are confident that you have the masses, we are waiting for you to resign and come to the ground again,” Mramba said.

Mramba was flanked by his Malindi Town and Jilore Wards counterparts, David Kadenge Dadu and Daniel Chain Chiriba respectively, who vowed to join hands and deliver the seat to ODM.

It was not immediately possible to get a comment from Jumwa as she did not accompany her candidate as expected.

But at a recent function, the outspoken MP promised to give the orange party a run for its money, while vowing to embarrass former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other party stalwarts.
