Safaricom rebrands M-PESA to “Eliud 1:59” for 7 days

Safaricom has today unveiled a new Mpesa logo to Eliud Kipchoge for the next seven days since its launch in March 2007.

This is in support of the athlete’s quest challenge to become the first ever athlete to run a full marathon in 01:59:00 seconds.

Eliud Kipchoge is M-pesa’s brand ambassador and would see the services capability of empowering Kenyans to receive and send money in the country and across the world.

Safaricom Acting Chief Executive Officer Michael Joseph acknowledged the company’s support and commitment for Kipchoge as he races against time.

“As part of our support, we will be empowering any Kenyan across the country to stream the challenge for free, wherever they are, with the advantage of our strong network and wide coverage,” said Joseph.

He noted that Kipchoge is a reflection of resilience and determination for every Kenyan as he has taken on challenge after challenge.

“The last few years have seen Kipchoge emerge not only as one of the greatest athletes ever, but also as one of the most accomplished people ever and it is a privilege to partner with him on this historic occasion as our Mpesa brand in his recognition,” added Joseph.

Safaricom Chief Financial Services Officer Sitoyo Lopokoiyit, said that the company would also provide a free YouTube bundle on the day of Kipchoge’s race from 8 AM to 4 PM to enable all Safaricom customers to stream the race live on their phones at no cost.

“The bundle will be accessed by dialing *159# upon which a customer will receive a free YouTube bundle, allowing them to stream the entire race at no cost,” said Lopokoiyit.

He further added that to rally Kenyans in their support for Kipchoge, Safaricom would enable all its customers to send free messages voicing their support for the athlete during the race by sending a text to 159 and the messages will be displayed live on broadcast TV feeds during the race.
Kipchoge who arrived in Vienna on Tuesday was seen beginning his race-week preparation ahead of the #INEOS159 challenge.

Kipchoge’s partnership with Safaricom dates back to 2017 when the company launched its “Twaweza” brand campaign with the marathoner taking the role of brand ambassador.
