CS Munya announces new milk price for Farmers

The newly appointed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS), Peter Munya, has directed the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) to buy milk from farmers at Sh. 33 per litre, starting today, January 15, 2020.

He told farmers to take their milk to the new KCC depots and sell it at the said price.

Yesterday, President’ Uhuru Kenyatta issued a directive that milk producers be protected from illegal imports to enable farmers benefit from their produce.

The CS who was addressing a press briefing at his Kilimo Office, today, said plans are also underway to charge value added tax of 16 percent on milk products that have been imported outside the East African Community.

“The trading rules allow us to impose the VAT on the imported milk for trade balance,” Munya added.

On counterfeit contraband milk powders, the CS warned that security agencies and the Kenya Bureau of Standard (KEBS) are on alert and ready to deal with the dishonest traders.

“We are firm on dealing with unscrupulous traders who are distorting the market and destroying livelihoods of our farmers,” he assured.

Munya who reported to his new offices, today, following his appointment, yesterday, announced that the government will hire three aircrafts that will be used for spraying over 20,000 litres of pesticides to the locust invaded regions. He added that four additional aircrafts will also be deployed to the areas for locust surveillance.

“We want to enhance capacity to the county teams because surveillance is a continuous, additional officers from the counties will be trained with the additional resources we have gotten,”Munya said.

“I want to assure Kenyans that the government has control over the situation where seven swarms of locusts have been clearly contained and five swarms are yet to be controlled,” he added, and dismissed claims that swarms of locusts had been cited in Turkana.

Munya confirmed that the government has already put in place a Board of Directors at the New Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (KPCU) institution which has been operationalized.
