Bungoma KCPE achiever appeals for help after scholarship woes

As the government continues to push for 100 percent transition to secondary school, not all pupils from humble backgrounds will afford to pay for secondary education due to the high cost.

In Bungoma County, 12-year-old Esther Naliaka Webala from Luanda village in Kanduyi Sub County is among hundreds of children from poor backgrounds who cannot afford to pay fees and also missed out on the many scholarship programmes being offered by a number of institutions.

Esther Naliaka is now appealing for help after her efforts to secure a scholarship proved futile.

She sat for her KCPE exam at Luanda primary school and managed to get 359 marks and was selected to join Tigoi Girls High school in Vihiga where she was supposed to join on January 13 but did not manage due to financial constraints in the family.

“I got 359 marks and was so hopeful that it would help me to achieve my goals of becoming a surgeon but my grandfather was not able to raise the fees and i am still at home,” she said dejectedly.

Speaking to the press, her grandfather Nelson Makhanu Webala explained that he had taken the responsibility of bringing up his granddaughter after her parents separated while she was still young.

“It has been hard for me because her mother Mary Nasimiyu differed with my son while she was still a baby and we do not know her whereabouts,” he said.

He added that his son Anoyi Barasa who is the father to the girl is not able to cater for the needs of his daughter as he is jobless. He is also an alcoholic.

Nelson says he applied for the County governor’s scholarship which his granddaughter qualified for as per the requirements but to his dismay, the girls name was not approved for the scholarship.

“She was shortlisted for the first time but we have never been told why her name was removed from the list of beneficiaries,” he said and added that he also applied for the Equity Bank scholarship but she was not successful.

He is now calling upon well-wishers to intervene and help the girl to pursue her studies.
