Media Council demands action after police assault 4 journalists

Media Council of Kenya has urged the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Independent Policing oversight Authority to take action following increased cases of attack on journalist by police officers in 3 separate cases in Nairobi, Nakuru and Mombasa.

In the recent case, Nation Media Group photojournalist Laban Walloga was assaulted by police in Mombasa on Monday while covering the weekly Anti-SGR protests.

On Sunday , January 12 Robert Maina of Royal Media Service was beaten up and his recorder confiscated by police officer from Njoro Police station while covering protest by Egerton University students in Nakuru.

And on Friday January 10, KTN's Investigative journalist Brian Obuya and Daily Nation's Wanjohi Githae were roughed up by police at Kilimani police station while covering the arrest of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.

" MCK wishes to draw the attention of the Director of Public Prosecutions and Independent Police Oversight Authority ( IPOA) to this matter with a view of facilitating justice for the journalists affected by the  the pending cases, "said MCK in a statement.

According to MCK it has received 8 cases involving assault of scribes by police in the past week.
