Munya: Stop sending us photos of locusts

Newly appointed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has called on Kenyans to stop sending photos of desert locusts.

Speaking to the press at his office in Kilimo House, Munya reversed his predecessor Mwangi Kiunjuri's orders that citizens were to sent the photos of suspected locusts to the government for confirmation.

Mr Munya said the government had deployed competent individuals who were employing scientific methods in identifying the insects that have so far wreaked havoc in Garissa, Isiolo, Meru and Marsabit.

" Please stop sending us photos of locusts anymore, we already have competent people on the ground who are using scientific methods to identify them, " he said .

He added that the government had deployed 3 more spray aircraft to locust infested areas. He further said that 4 aircraft will be deployed  surveillance and  distribution of additional 20,000 litres of pesticide.

CS Munya refuted rumours that locusts were sighted in Turkana assuring Kenyans  that the government was battling the invasion of the voracious feeders.
