Laikipia County fires 172 workers

Laikipia County is set to lay off 172 workers who have been declared redundant , in a move aimed at reducing wage bill.

The county's wage bill currently stand at 58 percent against the required 35 percent by the Public Finance Act 2012.

Those set to be retrenched include switch board operators, typists, clerks and messengers whose work have been taken over by emerging technologies.

The affected staff had been served with the redundancy notice on January 8th.

The lay off came following an audit conducted that revealed that majority of the employees couldn't outline their job description despite being on payroll.

The county government parts with a whopping sh 190.8 million on salaries.
