The 63rd commemoration of field Marshall Dedan Kimathi to be held next week

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga in collaboration with the Dedan Kimathi Foundation has welcomed all Kenyans for the annual commemoration of Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi which will be held on Tuesday February 18th this year.

Speaking yesterday at Kabiruini ground, Kahiga called on Kenyans to turn up at Dedan Kimathi Secondary School grounds Nyeri County to commemorate the day.

He said that the County Government of Nyeri has honoured Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi by constructing a monument at Karuna-ini village, Tetu sub-county.

This, he said is the exact location where Kimathi was shot on his thigh and subsequently captured, keeping alive one of his famous quote, 'It is better to die on our feet than to live on our knees for fear of colonial rule'.

He noted that Mau Mau veterans played a key role in the struggle for Kenya’s independence hence the need to recognize and support them.

The event expected to be attended by more than 20,000 people will include exhibitions by communities from other counties who also took part in the fight for independence of the country.

The governor observed that the history of the struggle for independence cannot be complete without the mention of the role played by Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi adding monument will keep this important history alive.

Kahiga further noted that other communities who took part in the fight for independence will also be celebrated, with cultural exhibitions from the Nandi, Giriama, Maasai, Luhya, Meru among others.

 The National Museum of Kenya and County Government of Nyeri will also be exhibiting.

The Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi commemoration is held annually.
