Thousands attend sendoff of venerated nun’s convert

Thousands of mourners yesterday flocked Mbari ya Nguura village in Gikondi location, Mukurwe-ini sub-county of Nyeri to attend the burial of granny Catherine Wangari Giitwa.

Giitwa who was aged 96 years, was one of the few people that interacted with blessed Sister Irene Stefani (Nyaatha) and was taught catechism by the nun when missionaries arrived in Nyeri.

In a condolence message read by Nyeri Catholic archdiocese postulator Fr. Peter Githinji Nyaga, Catholic pontifical office for sainthood in Vatican said they had lost an instrumental witness who has been providing credible information on Sister Nyaatha.

Fr. Githinji who was among  priests presiding over the funeral service at Gikondi Catholic church described Catherine as an icon and an embodiment of Christian values and advised all Christians to emulate her.

"I have known Gaterina (as she is called by area residents) since my childhood and she was very generous and compassionate to the needy; always ready to help, let us emulate her," stressed Fr. Githinji who hails from the area.

Similar sentiments were echoed by Mukurwe-ini MP Antony Kiai who added that Catherine's family was one of his (Kiai) family's closest friends.

Mrs Giitwa is survived by nine children and many grand and great grandchildren.
