Youth presents their proposal to the BBI steering committee

Youths for Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) today demanded for more inclusivity both at national and county levels.

Presenting   their proposals to the BBI National Steering Committee Friday, the Youth are called for the political party Act to be amended and include 30 percent of youth in the national executive committee structures.

Alex Matere, the Chairperson of the youth for the BBI said that the interpretation of inclusivity has been captured in the draft report but the youth are missing out in most of the representation

“The youth should be included in both National and County governments to guarantee quality representation. The cabinet assistant secretaries should be renamed assistant ministers and they should not be above 35 years,’’ said Matere.

Another member of the youth for BBI, Teddy Mwabire emphasized on devolution which he said that the equitable share of the revenue allocated for the Counties should be increased from the current 15 to 35 percent.

“Increased funding to the counties will enhance devolution and economic growth through partnerships among regional blocks which the government has been encouraging,” said Mwabire.

Ann Mvuria, chairperson of the students’ society at the University of Nairobi said that legal enforcement of laws should be ensured so that the citizens and office bearers present their duties in an accountable and responsible manner.

“There should be formation of legal enforcement agency  that will make sure law enforcers  are more vigilant and come up with more inventive ways to enforce existing laws,’’ said Mvuria.

The youth, she added should be fully involved and represented in the peace and reconciliation agenda to ensure that their voices are heard.

This, Mvuria noted, would promote young people sense of belonging and motivate them to be more actively involved in democratic processes.

The National Steering Committee on the implementation of the BBI has for the last two days been holding a meeting at a Nairobi hotel to validate the report of the BBI task force that today included the youth to give their proposals on the report.
