Newly appointed officials announce plans to revitalize KANU in Bungoma

Kenya African National Union (KANU) has reactivated its leadership network in Bungoma county with the appointment of interim officials in preparation for 2022 general elections.

The appointed interim team include Maurice Mukinginyi as county party chair and Joseph Kimkung as his deputy. Kimkung is a former Mt Elgon MP.

Sammy Barasa will be the secretary, deputized by Robert Mutonyi. Saddie Chesori is organizing secretary, deputized by Godfrey Wangila while Musa Abdallah was named treasurer.

Their appointment was reportedly sanctioned by the party headquarters but this could not be independently verified as efforts to reach secretary general Nick Salat were futile.

The new Bungoma County branch officials immediately voiced their resolve to support Baringo Senator Gideon Moi’s quest for presidency in 2022 during their first media briefing at Lechante hotel in Kimilili town.

Senator Moi, who was handed the famous ivory baton by his elder brother, Rongai MP Raymond Moi, following the death of their father, former President Daniel Moi, in February this year, is yet to declare his interest in the top seat.

Mukinginyi said that KANU, the oldest political party in Kenya today, needs to recruit members and establish a vibrant network in all the nine constituencies in the county now dominated by ANC, Jubilee, Ford Kenya and ODM.

"Gideon Moi has what it takes to lead this country as he is both a visionary and humble leader," he said.

He announced that KANU party offices will be relocated from Kimilili to Webuye town for ease of access by members from all over the county noting Webuye was more centrally located.

Kanu was popular in Bungoma under the leadership the late cabinet minister Elijah Mwangale until 1992 when it was upstaged by Ford Kenya during the first multi-party elections.
