Savula faults KERRA funds allocation formula

KNA    Lugari MP Ayub Savula has faulted the formula used by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) in allocating funds to various constituencies for road maintenance.

Speaking when he inspected state of roads in his constituency on Monday, Savula said it is unfair for the authority to allocate Sh. 22 Million equally to all 290 constituencies across the country.

“Lugari constituency with a coverage of 278 kilometres (kms) of roads is disadvantaged compared to smaller constituencies like Mumias East that has a coverage of 72kms,” he complained.

Savula stated that the Authority should consider allocating the monies based on the land area and not a similar figure across board.

The legislator vowed to move a motion in the National Assembly for the review of funds allocation formula.

He took issue with the Kakamega County administration for failing to use cess from the sugar millers to maintain roads.

The legislator said despite the fact that the millers remit cess, no cash has been ploughed back to maintain roads in the respective areas.

He urged the locals to give way for the tarmacking of Turbo- Makutano -River Nzoia road that will begin in a few weeks’ time.
