County empowers youth through internship programme

KNA     Nyeri County Government has engaged 200 youths in a one-year internship programme to enable them to gain hands on job experience for employability.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga said the challenges facing the youths in the country if not well addressed are a time bomb waiting to explode.

Kahiga was speaking in Nyeri town Thursdays, when he launched the third phase of the internship programme. He asked the youths not to be deterred by failures adding from the failures one becomes a better person.

During the function, the governor claimed that he made a mistake by nominating his deputy who is a non-performer pointing out that he has now become wiser and would in future make better decisions.

“It is my mistake and 1 carry it with me because when that person is not performing, she is not even here with us, that clearly states one thing that I made a wrong decision,” Kahiga declared.

He added, “I am proud of that and I have learnt my mistake. Even you, (interns) you are going to learn from the failures and you become a better person.”

Kahiga said that the interns comprised of graduates with degrees, diplomas and even certificates to give them an opportunity to gain experience in their respective fields.

They are distributed to various departments where one is assigned a mentor and periodical reports given on his/her performance.

Degree holders are given a stipend of Sh 12,000, Diplomas Sh 11,000 and certificates Sh 10,000 which accounts for about Sh 27 million annually.

He said the programme has attracted interest from other devolved units that are coming to benchmark and learn more for replicas in their areas. “So far we have four and Kirinyaga has also shown interest,” Kahiga added.

The Governor expressed satisfaction with the internship programme adding that from the two cohorts that have left, the county government was able to absorb about 50 new employees.

Kahiga said that his administration is molding the youths to become better citizens, better employees for the county and the country at large, as well as other institutions.
