Kenya Power rolls out a Sh 1.25 billion smart metering project

KNA       Kenya Power has rolled out a Sh. 1.25 billion smart metering project for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME’s) to enhance service delivery and customer experience.

The World Bank funded project targets 55, 000 SME’s across the country with smart meters that facilitate two way communications between the company and the customer.

The platform will give customers real time information on their consumption and billing through an online customer portal.

Speaking during the launch of the program in Kisumu on Wednesday, Kenya Power Managing Director (MD) Bernard Ngugi said this will enhance transparency and credibility of the company’s billing system.

Through the platform, he added the company will be able to detect power outages, locate and mobilize quick responses to enhance customer experience.

“In case of any outage, the smart meters are able to communicate directly with the company’s National Contact Centre to facilitate immediate resolution as Kenya Power teams are alerted promptly,” he said.

So far he said 3, 000 SME’s have been connected adding that the remaining will have the meters in place by June 30th this year. After the World Bank project, he said, Kenya Power will take over and connect the remaining SMEs across the country before moving to ordinary customers.

Focus, he said will be on big hotels, dry cleaners, Jua kali artisans and customers whose consumption is relatively high.

The company, he acknowledged, continues to incur revenue losses in the Western Region due to power outages adding that the ministry of energy was keen on addressing the issue.

The KETRACO, he informed, has given an assurance to have the Olkaria-Lessos-Kisumu power line complete by March this year adding that this will ensure stable supply of electricity in the region.
