Major sweep feesh blood takes over Nyamira KUPPET seats

KNA         Post-primary education teachers (KUPPET) in Nyamira have elected new office bearers after sacking seven out of the 10 branch officials., only three retained their seats.

Tension was high at the Nyamira High School venue of the polling exercise as the polls attracted high voter turnout, a number which has never been experienced before.

Among the seats which attracted stiff competition was that of the Executive Secretary and Chairman  in which the incumbents, Mr.Lewis Nyakweba and George Makaa respectively struggled to retain  their seats with very thin margins.

Lewis beat his closest challenger Joseph Sonye with just 29 votes after garnering 645 votes while Joseph Marigwa came distant third with 385 votes.

Makaa retained the chairman seat with 833 votes, a win margin of 12 votes from his closest challenger, Festus Segera who garnered 821 votes.

George Ayieko narrowly beat his competitor Philemon Okindo to retain his assistant executive secretary seat by garnering 873 votes while Okindo had 750 votes.

Evans Matuga, the incoming Organising Secretary beat the incumbent Cyrus Serembe in a hotly contested race. Matuga garnered 938 as the incumbent struggled with 721 votes.

Stella Moturi beat the incumbent male incumbent to win the treasurer post with 780 votes against incumbent  Tom Onsongo who got 755 votes.

According to Matuga, the time had come for teachers to be felt and their concerns addressed with dignity.

He said the 'sweep' at the branch office was a sign that teachers were dissatisfied with the former office bearers.

"Today turn of events is a clear indication that teachers want better services from the office bearers, the main reason why those of us who have been elected need to work closely as a team to ensure that there's improved and efficient service delivery to union members who have elected us into office.’ Said Matuga.

The election exercise which was peaceful was presided over by Nyamira County election officials.
